Backend Engineer
About the role
About the Role Workbolt AI is seeking experienced backend engineers for an active remote project supporting advanced AI systems. You will apply production engineering judgment to realistic backend-development and AI-evaluation work. What You Will Work On You may design and evaluate APIs, microservices, database schemas, distributed workflows, authentication systems, asynchronous processing, observability, and reliability patterns. Assignments can include creating reference implementations, debugging failures, reviewing AI-generated code, and identifying security, performance, or correctness issues. Typical Deliverables Deliverables may include backend services, API specifications, data models, test suites, architecture notes, debugging analyses, evaluation rubrics, reference solutions, and precise feedback on AI-generated work. How It Works Submit your resume, availability, and work-authorization information. Qualified candidates receive project scope, expected commitment, timeline, and compensation details during the selection process. No prior AI experience is required. Contract and Payment Information This is a fully remote, project-based independent-contractor role. Project duration and weekly workload may vary or change according to client needs and performance. Compensation ranges from $70 to $150 per hour depending on scope and experience. Experts must not use confidential or proprietary information from any employer, client, or institution.

Responsibilities
- •Design, implement, test, and review production-quality backend services, APIs, data models, authentication flows, and asynchronous workflows.
- •Create realistic backend engineering tasks, reference solutions, test cases, and evaluation criteria grounded in production scenarios.
- •Evaluate AI-generated code and technical explanations for correctness, security, scalability, reliability, performance, and maintainability.
- •Diagnose failures in distributed systems, databases, integrations, and service boundaries; identify root causes and recommend practical fixes.
- •Document assumptions and architectural tradeoffs clearly, incorporate reviewer feedback, and deliver independently in a remote project environment.
Benefits
- •Competitive project-based compensation of $70–$150 per hour, depending on assignment scope and experience.
- •Flexible, fully remote independent-contractor work with project details shared during selection.
- •Use backend expertise to improve how advanced AI systems design, debug, and reason about production software.
